Pam Roselle Fine Art Paintings

My intention as a contemporary studio painter is to create bodies of work that express the essence of nature and its inherent rhythm.  I paint with a sense of urgency and immediacy and enjoy creating multiple paintings simultaneously.  Using layer upon layer of color, strong lines and textures,  I aim to paint the feelings I see in the world around me and to draw the viewer into my bliss.

Most of my paintings are created on canvas, illustration board or watercolor paper using acrylics.  However, I love to experiment with alternate substructures and other water-based media.  Typically I begin the process by applying gesso or some type of acrylic ground to establish a foundation and texture that is all mine.   Then I decide on the dominant form of the composition and color scheme and lay out the the basic design using paint or tape.  On occasion the painting spins off in another direction and when that happens I simply let the discovery process direct me.  Using sponges, paper towels, brushes, palette knives and my fingers I begin layering in pigment using both positive and reductive painting techniques to create depth and light.  Next, I add acrylic washes and stains to emphasize mood and pull the painting together as needed.  Finally, I apply a transparent UV acrylic varnish for protection from the elements.

The unforeseen discoveries, the zen of flowing paint, and the emotions evoked by different color combinations keep me painting with passion.  My hope is that viewers of my work enjoy the end result as much as I enjoy the creative process.
